Apple announces cheaper Apple Pencil with a hidden USB-C port

The new Apple Pencil will be available for purchase in early November for S$119.

Although Apple did not announce any new iPad models, it did announceanew Apple Pencil.

The big news about this new Apple Pencil is that it comes with a sliding cap that hides the USB-C port.

This is particularly handy for owners of the 10th generation iPad because it means you can use a USB-C cable to connect to this Apple Pencil for pairing and charging, and not have to resort to a convoluted system involving the S$15.10 USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter.

While you still can attach the new Apple Pencil to the side of the iPad for storage (this works with the 10th-generation iPad), it will not be wirelessly charged or paired. Instead, the new Apple Pencil will enter into a sleep state to conserve battery life.

There is a slide cap on the new Apple Pencil which hides the USB-C port.

Another thing to note is that, curiously, this new Apple Pencil does not support pressure sensitivity – a feature that's present on the second and first-generation Apple Pencils.

It also lacks the double-tap gesture to quickly switch between tools, a feature that remains exclusive to the Apple Pencil (2nd generation).

However, it stilloffers the same pixel-perfect accuracy, low latency, and tilt sensitivity of the earlier Apple Pencils. If this is confusing to you, Apple has a handy comparison chart which you can see below.

Apple says the new Apple Pencil is compatible with all iPad models with a USB-C port. This includes the iPad (10th generation), iPad Air (4th and 5th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generation), and iPad mini (6th generation).

Pricing and Availability

The new Apple Pencil will be available in early November for S$119, making it the most affordable model in the lineup. The Apple Pencil (1st generation) and Apple Pencil (2nd generation) are priced at S$150.35 and S$200.85 respectively.

Education pricing is available for the new Apple Pencil; current and newly accepted college students and their parents, as well as faculty, staff, and home-school teachers of all grade levels, can purchase the new Apple Pencil at S$105.
