Apple TV+ has rolled out the first trailer for its new meta spy comedy, Argylle, helmed by director Matthew Vaughn. In an unexpected twist, it showcases Superman actor Henry Cavill wearing a less than flattering velveteen sweater and a questionable hairstyle – essentially looking like the antithesis of his usually suave characters. If the initial glimpses are anything to go by, Argylle is set to poke satirical jabs at the spy genre, much like films such as Netflix's Red Notice. Though this particular flavour of humour is a gamble in a genre renowned for its slickness, the star-studded cast and intriguing plot might just swing it into success.

Cavill’s character Argylle serves as a springboard for the film's plot but doesn't dominate the narrative (in the trailer, at least). Instead, the focus shifts to Elly Conway, a reclusive spy novelist portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard. Life takes a surprising turn for Conway when she realises that her fictional exploits have caught the attention of a very real criminal organisation. The unsettling coincidence? Her book series uncannily mirrors their actual sinister plans. To compound her woes, Conway’s quiet life is further disrupted when a living, breathing agent named Aiden, played by Sam Rockwell, shows up at her doorstep with a grave warning: "Come with me if you want to live."

Rather than a solo adventure, Argylle turns into an ensemble caper involving not just Cavill, Howard, and Rockwell, but also a medley of high-profile names like John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, and Catherine O’Hara. What follows, as suggested by the trailer, is an action-packed thrill ride rife with quirky situations and misadventures that not even Conway’s carrier-bound cat escapes.

One could argue that meta-comedies aimed at the spy genre are often hit or miss. Films that try to balance comedy with high-stakes action risk being dismissed as frivolous by fans of traditional spy flicks or panned for lack of genuine humour. But Argylle appears to be on a mission to defy those odds. Whether or not it succeeds depends on its ability to marry the absurdist elements of its story with a narrative that still holds up as a legitimate spy thriller.

With a release date slated for February 2, 2024, in theatres, and an Apple TV+ release to follow, the film will soon reveal if its ambitious genre-bending gamble pays off.
