The latest tvOS beta reveals device support files for the Apple iPad mini 6.

Apple could be working on a future HomePod design with an iPad mini-sized display.

9to5Mac discovered evidence within the tvOS 17.2 beta that indicates such a device is being tested by Apple. Aside from the usual device support files for Apple TV models and HomePods, 9to5Mac also uncovered device support files for the iPad mini 6.

In addition, the tvOS 17 SDK has hidden support for the iPad mini 6 with some frameworks having audio calibration data and drivers for the mini-sized tablet. These findings led 9to5Mac to speculate whether a future HomePod with an iPad mini-sized display is in the works.

Bloomberg reported in August 2022 that Apple might launch at least four new smart home devices by early 2024, and one of these devices is said to be a product for the kitchen that combines an iPad and a speaker. A follow-up report earlier this year claimsApple is working on an iPad-based display for smart home management.

Despite a rocky start, Apple seems to have grand plans for the HomePod beyond a mere smart home speaker. Photos of a purported HomePod prototype with LCD display were leaked last week.

Such a product would make sense because a common complaint of speakers of these types is that, without a display, they can be tricky to set up and manage.

Will the HomePod lineup expand further? We shall see.
