The Seal is BYD's compact executive fastback and it is now available in Singapore.

Yes, it's named after the marine mammal and that's because it's the second car in BYD's Ocean series of EVs – the first being the Dolphin.

It's categorised as a compact executive fastback sedan, which is a convoluted way of saying that it's a four-door car with a coupe-like profile.

I think few would argue that it doesn't at least look sleek. To my eyes, there's a whiff of Ferrari Portofino about that front profile and I mean that as a compliment. Overall, I think it's rather handsome.

It will be offered here in three variants: Dynamic, Premium, and Performance. The entry-level Dynamic features a single motor driving the rear wheels and a battery capacity of 61.44kWh. Maximum claimed range is 460km and power is rated 203hp and 310nm of torque. It can charge at up to 110kW.

The Premium variant features a significantly larger 86.52kWh battery that delivers a claimed range of 570km. It also has a single motor driving the rear wheels but power is increased to 313hp and 360nm of torque. It can also charge faster at up to 150kW.

The top-of-the-line Performance variant has dual motors on both axles, which also means it has all-wheel drive. Together, the two motors deliver 630hp and 670nm of torque, that's enough to get it from a standstill to 100km/h in a claimed 3.8 seconds. Like the Premium variant, the Performance model also has an 82.56kWh battery but a slightly shorter range of 520km (yes, all that oomph has a price), and it can also charge at 150kW.

BYD cars have always been well-equipped and the Seal will be no different. All models will have a full panoramic glass roof, a large 15.6-inch infotainment display that rotates, a heads-up display, ventilated front seats, and the usual suite of safety features including lane driving assist, front collision warning, and more.

The Seal is a welcomed addition to the more sensible end of the EV market, which appears to be mostly dominated by SUVs. It looks handsome, and on paper at least, looks to check a lot of boxes for a lot of buyers. And if performance is a priority, I think you'd be hard pressed to find another sedan with over 500hp that costs less.
