Google has launched a new “Highlight Video” creation tool in Google Photos so you can turn your pics into a video memory with a few simple clicks.

While video creation tools already exist in the Google Photos App, according to Google, you can now create a highlight video by searching your vacations, activities, people, or events for the pictures you want to feature, and Google Photos will choose the best clips and photos in your gallery, add music and sync the video to the music to bring it all together.

In the example video a search for “Japan” and “2023” is entered and a video of the pictures is created automatically. While it works if all the photos chosen are the same orientation, there are black bars around the edges of pictures that don’t fit the video frame. It would be nice to see Google use its Generative AI powers to solve this.

Once the feature is available, you’ll be able to access it by tapping a new “plus” icon at the top of the gallery, which will open a menu where the new “Highlight video” option is along with others like “Animation” and “Collage. This new highlight video will apparently replace the existing “Movie” option.
