Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for PlayStation 5 gets launch date and a new thrilling trailer

Square Enix has pulled back the curtain on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth during PlayStation's latest State of Play, and gamers have a lot to talk about. Scheduled for a February 29, 2024, release, this sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake already appears to be an evolutionary step forward, fully exploiting the PlayStation 5's hardware capabilities. Fans can immediately reserve their copy through a digital twin pack on the PlayStation Store.

One of the trailer's standout moments was the debut of Cait Sith, signalling Square Enix's commitment to showcasing key facets from the original Final Fantasy VII. The trailer also whetted the appetite for an unfolding story that will delve into various plot elements iconic to the 1997 classic. That brings us to Aerith, whose demise in the original remains one of gaming's defining tragedies. Speculation is rife over whether Rebirth will remain faithful to this narrative or take a different route. Given that this is the second installment in the remake trilogy, expectations are high for more clues about possible deviations from the original storyline.

PlayStation also announced a collector's edition that goes beyond just the game. The package includes a SteelBook, CD soundtrack, art book, and a Sephiroth statue. Furthermore, the regular box art has garnered attention for featuring Zack Fair alongside Cloud and Sephiroth. Zack's significance in the Final Fantasy VII universe has grown substantially, most notably through the prequel game Crisis Core. His presence on the box art hints that he will have a more central role in this reimagining.

Yoshinori Kitase, the game's producer, says that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth can stand on its own merit, even for newcomers. A recap of the first game will be included, making the entry barrier low for those who missed the first remake. Kitase also hinted at an expansive world map.

With nearly four years since the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Feb 29, 2024, can’t come soon enough.
