Google Play Protect introduces real-time scanning to improve app security
In a blog post, Google has announced enhancements to Google Play Protect to improve security for users.
Google Play Protect automatically scans all of the apps on Android phones and works to prevent the installation of harmful apps and uses machine learning to adapt and improve.
What this means is that when a user was installing an app and had Play Protect activated, it would conduct a real-time check and warn users when it identified an app known to be malicious from existing scanning intelligence or was identified as suspicious by Google’s on-device machine learning, similarity comparisons, and other techniques.
With the enhancements, Google Play Protect will now recommend a real-time app scan when installing apps that have never been scanned before to help detect emerging threats. Scanning will extract important signals from the app and send them to the Play Protect backend infrastructure for a code-level evaluation. Once the real-time analysis is complete, users will get a result letting them know if the app looks safe to install or if the scan determines the app is potentially harmful.
Google says that this enhancement will help better protect users against malicious polymorphic apps that leverage various methods, such as AI, to be altered to avoid detection.
This enhancement from Google comes at an opportune time as more Singaporeans have been complaining of having had their smartphones hijacked by malicious apps and local banks have resorted to allowing their customers to block their savings from digital transactions. Google has also just announced a series of security feature updates designed to take the security burden off users.
