Grab introduces Family Account for enhanced user controls and safety
Ride-hailing platformGrab introduced a new beta feature called Family Account, designed for the heads of households to simplify ride management and payments for family members on the platform.
What is Grab's Family Account?
Family Account is an opt-in beta feature for Grab users in Singapore.
Withinthe Grab app, a designated user (known as the administrator) can invite multiple users into their group to share payment methods and track rides, even when multiple trips are ongoing.
The administrator can invite up to nine members. Users can book rides individually but have the administrator handle payments andtransaction history of all rides.
The administrator also has access to ride monitoring, allowing them to view ride details of their loved ones without having to share them manually via another app.
Family Account beta also includes a group chat feature that allows the administrator to chat directly with a driver as if they werethe passenger themselves. This works well for trips taken by elderly family members who are healthy enough to travel with minimal supervision, but may not speak the same languages or dialects as the driver-partner.
This feature will be expanded to "other markets" in 2024, which also means that users can manage rides for their loved ones even from another country or territory.
Why should I use Grab Family Account?
Grab says its decision to introduce Family Account stems from Grab's user behaviour.
It found that over 50%of users in Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia are already booking rides for family members.
Also, 62% of its survey respondents across all markets expressed interest in linking their family members' Grab accounts, citing travel safety and shared payment convenienceas key drivers to monitoring the rides taken by their loved ones.
With online services increasingly clamping down on account-sharing (1, 2), Grab’s Family Account is a welcomed feature that should offer more convenience to multi-user households.
