JerryRigEverything and dbrand jointly sue Casetify for copyright infringement
Popular teardown YouTuber JerryRigEverything and device impact protection maker dbrand havebeen hard at work — from making teardown stickers for mobile devices, to suing another company for stealing their intellectual property.
Zack Nelson, the face and owner of the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, uploaded a 13-minute video detailing how his teardown artwork for mobile devices was taken without his (or dbrand's) permission and sold on Casetify under different names.
Here's a little background: Dbrand partnered with Zack Nelson in 2019 to release a series of phone cases and Teardown skins that look as if the phone's back plate has been removed.
As the idea of teardowns belongs to no one, Dbrand and Nelson deliberately created design elements called "easter eggs" for their products, hiding both their brand's likeness in the teardown skins.
The YouTuber went to great lengths to show how he suspected his Teardown series skins were stolen. Zack pointed out several easter eggsthat are unique to dbrand and JerryRigEverything.
To make matters worse, Casetify removed some of the details on these stickers, but it was an incomplete attempt. The YouTuber identified stolen artwork based on the easter eggsCasetify forgot to remove, and thus, with the help of dbrand, filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Casetify.
According to dbrand's X (formerly Twitter) account, Casetify began removing certain phone cases from its online store after JerryRigEverything'svideo was published. Among the removed items was an "x-ray" reskin design by teardown publisher iFixit.
Casetify has released an official statement claiming it would further investigate this "allegation", calling itself a "bastion of originality," and that it experienced a "DDOS attack" during the height of these allegations.Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, Casetify removed its entire lineup of "Inside Out" cases from the website.
