M1 has increased the prices of its Data Passport roaming bundle, said the orange telco camp in an update on its official website.

According to the update, Data Passport will now cost more from 18 October 2023 onwards, with the revisions effective from the user’s November 2023 bill and beyond.

What is M1 Data Passport?

For those unfamiliar with Data Passport, M1 has this roaming data add-on that lets users convert a part of their local mobile data allotment for overseas data use. It deducts a portion of your local mobile data, gives you an equal amount in return as overseas data, and charges you money for that manoeuvre.

Previously, each block of Data Passport is 10GB drawn from your local mobile data bundle. The price hike also changes that, to 15GB drawn per block of Data Passport.

How much more expensive is it? Are we getting anything in return for the trouble?

Price hikes are around S$3 to S$5, depending on the type of Data Passport chosen. For instance, the Data Passport that covered Malaysia as a roaming destination was S$12 for 10GB blocks, and it’s now S$15 for 15GB. The S$60 for 10GB Europe Data Passport that covered 44 destinations around East and West Europe is now S$65 for 15GB. Remember, these allotments come out of your local mobile data limit.

Below is a tabled version of the M1 Data Passport price hikes. Naturally, M1 will rename its Data Passport products to reflect the new prices better.

M1 Data Passport price hikes as of 18 October 2023
Data Passport Name Before 18 October 2023 (10GB per block) After 18 October 2023 (15GB per block)
$12 Data Passport S$12 S$15
$30 Data Passport S$30 S$35
ASEAN Data Passport S$30 S$35
Asia Data Passport S$60 S$65
Europe Data Passport S$60 S$65

The S$15 Data Passport and S$35 Data Passport are still limited to one choice destination on their lists, just like before. The other Data Passports are multi-destination, allowing its users to tap into their overseas mobile data as long as it’s within the places indicated by the bundle.
