Let's be honest, with smartphone cameras being so capable and easy to use, most people don't really need a standalone camera like the new Nikon Z f. But look at that thing and tell me you don't want one.

The Z f is the follow-up to the Z fc from 2021. Like the Z fc, the Z f is clearly inspired by vintage Nikon film cameras. This vintage-inspired aesthetic is one that has paid off handsomely for Fujifilmand its X series cameras, and it's nice to see Nikon jumping onboard.

The Z f is larger and heavier than the Z fc. That's in part because it has a larger full-frame sensor (the Z fc is APSC) and it has a sturdier construction with more metal components. It's weather sealed so you can use it in inclement weather.

Crucially, it has large command dials that fans of vintage-inspired cameras love. There are dials for quick adjustments to your ISO, shutter speed, and exposure. On the top panel, there's also a small display that shows your aperture and a switch that instantly lets you shoot in black and white.

Speaking of displays, the EVF has a resolution of 3.69 million dots and the rear 3.2-inch touchscreen display is a fully articulating one with a resolution of around 2.1 million dots.

The sensor is a 24.5-megapixel full-frame BSIsensor, andif it sounds familiar it's because it's the same sensor in the Nikon Z6 II.

The Z f has a five-axis in-body image stabilisation systemthat Nikon claims can provide up to 8 stops of compensation – the highest in any Nikon Z camera. This IBIS also enables a new 96-megapixel Pixel-Shift mode.

This is paired with Nikon's EXPEED 7 image processor which provides the same subject detection autofocus system as the pricier Nikon Z8. This means the camera can identify and track subjects like people, dogs, cats, birds, and even cars and planes.

On paper, at least, the Nikon Z f could be a winner for the brand. The vintage styling is one that is appreciated by many and the Z f isn't just all show and no go. Behind its good looks is a highly capable camera with good specs and features.
