Satellite communication coming to at least one of the new Samsung Galaxy S24 models
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series might launch with satellite connectivity.
John Yong-In Park, the head of Samsung Electronics SLSI Business Division, shared during the 2023 Semiconductor Expo (SEDEX) that the company will enable satellite connectivity on its smartphones in 2024.
Since the Galaxy S24 series is tipped to be announced in January next year, the next-generation Galaxy S series phones are first in line to support satellite connectivity.
This isn't the first time that satellite connectivity is said to be coming to Samsung's flagship phones. In November 2022, there were rumours of the feature launching on the Galaxy S23.
To add fuel to the fire, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon Satellitein January this year. It wasthe world's first satellite-based two-way capable messaging solution for smartphones and was slated to be available on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 devices in select regions from the second half of the year.
Samsung also secured standardised 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) modem technology for two-way communication between smartphones and satellites in February. Using the Exynos Modem 5300 reference platform, Samsung was able to simulate the 5G NTN standard-based satellite technology.
With Apple investing $450 million to support its Emergency SOS via satellite, and the feature proven its worth in at least three actual incidents, Samsung might feel the pressure to launch satellite connectivity on its Galaxy flagship phones.
