Tecno launches mid-range clamshell foldable, the Phantom V Flip 5G
Tecno today (22 September 2023) announced the launch of its clamshell-type smartphone with a foldable display, called the Phantom V Flip 5G.
As a clamshell flip phone, Tecno said that the Phantom V Flip 5G combines its focus on foldable aesthetics, a powerful camera system, and a unique design to win over users to its first-ever attempt with this form factor.
The phone’s front plate offers a circular 1.32-inch cover screen called “The Planet”. It’s an AMOLED panel (466 x 466 pixels resolution, 60Hz refresh rate) that holds notification previews, and widgets. It doubles up as a secondary viewfinder for selfies.
Its dual rear cameras pack a 64MP main shooter with an RGBW sensor (with f1.7 aperture, 0.8μm pixel size pixel-binned to 1.6μm), combined with ISOCELL Pixel Isolation and Pixel Fusion Algorithm to boost its low-light shooting capabilities. Tecno said its 64MP main camera can get 60% greater light intake when compared to conventional phone cameras using RGGB sensors.
Its main camera also uses Dual-Camera Fusion technology, which taps into its adjacent 13MP ultra-wide shooter to help retain details in ultra-wide-angle photos. On the inner display is a 32MP front camera with a Micro-slit Dual-flash, making it one of the first flip phones to carry a front-facing flash.
Its clamshell design allows upright use between 30-150˚, letting users create hands-free photos and videos in its half-folded state. Tecno also packed in voice-activated and gesture-controlled capturing methods to aid its unique photo-taking style.
As a phone, you get a 6.9-inch flexible LTPO AMOLEDMain Screendisplay (FHD, 2,640 x 1,080 pixels, 10-120Hz refresh rate, 360Hz touch sampling). It has a near-creaseless design made possible by its proprietary drop-shaped hinge.
It’s powered by a mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 8050 5G chipset, a 4,000mAh battery, with 45W wired charging that Tecno claimed can do 0-50% in just 15 minutes.
Despite lacking an official or retail presence in Singapore, the Chinese smartphone company held its global keynote and product launch event at Resorts World Convention Centre.
Availability and pricing
The Tecno Phantom V Flip 5G officially begins retail in one of its key markets, India, before going to other territories. It has an official price of INR 49,999 / US$598 for 8GB RAM + 256GB storage (approx. S$816), making it one of the most affordable clamshell foldable handsets available now.
We've been informed that it won't be available officially in Singapore, buthopefully that'll change.
