AMD launches two new mid-tier graphics cards: The Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT
The graphics card war between AMD and NVIDIA continues to heat up. On 6th September, AMD will launch the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT, priced at US$449 and US$499, respectively.
Aimed at offering solid 1440p performance, the launch aims to address a noticeable gap in the market for AMD loyalists, as the last suitable consideration in this price range is the Radeon RX 6700 XT launched over two years ago.The new cards from AMD claim to deliver over 60fps at 1440p maximum settings in the latest games, without relying on upscaling. Such performance includes PC ports like The Last of Us Part I and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Furthermore, AMD claims the GPUs can exceed 100fps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.
Interestingly, when matched against NVIDIA's offerings, AMD's US$449 RX 7700 XT appears poised to give stiff competition to NVIDIA’s US$399 GeForce 4060 Ti. The pricier US$499 RX 7800 XT might similarly edge out the US$599 RTX 4070, particularly in rasterized games.

However, while the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT offer competitive prices and performance, they aren't without their drawbacks. The AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT's reference design requires 2.5 slots in a desktop, which is more substantial than NVIDIA’s RTX 4070's two-slot design. The AMD offerings also have a higher power demand, consuming up to 263W, compared to the GeForce’s 200W. The delta grows more if compared to theGeForce 4060 Ti, which is only designed to consume 160W.
In terms of memory, the RX 7700 XT boasts 12GB of GDDR6 with a bandwidth of 432GB per second, while the RX 7800 XT offers 16GB and 624GB per second. This is significantly more than what NVIDIA's options could muster and potentially give AMD an advantage over NVIDIA's lesser-equipped GPUs.
AMD is also set to launch FSR 3 on the same day. Announced a year ago, their latest upscaling version of FSR integrates frame generation, akin to NVIDIA's DLSS 3.0, and introduces Fluid Motion Frames. Additionally, FSR 3 provides a Native Anti-Aliasing mode, a feature that sharpens game graphics rather than upscaling them.
