Apple rumoured to launch low-cost MacBooks in second half of 2024
Apple might launch a new lineup of low-cost MacBooks next year.
Industry sources told DigiTimes that Apple is developing low-cost MacBooks to compete with Chromebooks in the education sector. The low-cost MacBooks are said to be part of a new lineup to differentiate from the current MacBook Air and MacBook Pro series.
Even though these MacBooks are low-cost, Apple will still use a metal casing with "different materials". The costs of the mechanical components are also expected to be lower. As there is no indication of any production at major Apple suppliers, DigiTimes claims a launch in the first half of 2024 is unlikely.
Apple runs Back to School promotions annually for university students and their parents, as well as teachers and staff at all levels. The Back to School promotions typically include discounts on select MacBook, iMac, Mac mini and iPad models , bundled discounts for accessories and AppleCare, and freebies.
Having said that, it doesn't quite make sense for Apple to develop a low-cost MacBook for the education sector when it already has the dedicated Back to School promotions. Nonetheless, we will keep a lookout for additional reports on this.
