Apple releases iOS 17.0.3 to fix iPhone 15 overheating issues

Apple has just released iOS 17.0.3. This newest update addresses the overheating issue that has been reported by some users.

Just days ago, Apple acknowledged that anumber of users are affected by overheating iPhone 15s and said that this was caused by a bug. They also said that the issue could be partly caused by third-party apps overloading the phones.

It's unclear what exactly is causing these phones to overheat because it's not something that every user experienced.

My personal experience with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Maxis no different from previous generation phones. My take is that these phones will run warm on initial setup mostly because there's a lot of on-device processing happening.

Photos, for example, require index libraries to be rebuilt becausebecause Apple insists on protecting user privacy and doing this on device as opposed to in the cloud and on their servers. Soif you have a lot of photos in your photo library, the phone will inevitably run warm as it attempts to index all of them.

As usual, Apple is vague on what the fix is and some have speculated that Apple might resort to downclocking the A17 Pro on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to address the issue.

However, after updating our iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to iOS 17.0.3, I can confirm that clock speeds, as reported by Geekbench 6, remain unchanged. I also ran a number of tests and found that performance remains unchanged. So any fears that Apple might have downclocked the phone to reduce heat appears to be unfounded.

If you have facing overheating issues on your iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15, the way to update is to go to Settings >> General >> Software Update.
