In brightest day, in darkest night, let no evil escape my sight…. Er, sorry. Couldn’t resist inserting a Green Lantern reference when first coming across the press release announcing the new Garmin tactix 7 AMOLED Edition watch.

All jokes aside, this new addition to Garmin’s existing tactix lineup has one key feature that makes it not just a watch that is dependable in just about all outdoor environments, but one that is dependable in either day or night, thanks to the use of an easy-to-read adaptive 1.4-inch AMOLED display that is not only easy to read in harsh sunlight, but also can be dimmed below a single nit of brightness in the event you want to go about undetected.

For those who will truly find a need for its tactical features in the field, the tactix 7 AMOLED Edition comes with a new Night Vision Goggle mode that builds on the earlier edition’s white/green flashlight, this time with a dimmable green flashlight that provides localised illumination without messing with natural night vision. Nighttime visibility is also improved with Red Shift Mode, which blocks light colours that constrict the pupils of your eyes, which also has the side benefit of reducing sleep cycle disturbances.

At the same time, features like a built-in heart rate sensor help provide the user with additional data to help understand how your body is responding to your environment, or whatever physical challenges that's currently in progress.

Finding your way is made a simple matter on the tactix 7 AMOLED Edition, thanks to multi-band GPS support. The watch also comes preloaded with TopoActive maps and Public Land Boundaries Maps,SkiViewMaps, and more than 43,000 full-colour golf courses around the world and is compatible with Garmin’s Outdoor Maps+ service.

As befitting a tactical watch, the tactix 7 AMOLED Edition is built to MIL-STD-810 specifications for durability in the field, thanks to features like a sapphire crystal lens and fibre-reinforced polymer case and a titanium rear cover, while the rugged design still looks sufficiently sophisticated to transition from the field and into everyday use on the wrist.
