Qualcomm today (12 October 2023) announced a renaming of its made-for-PC processors and platforms, calling it the Snapdragon X Series.

According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon X Series is an evolution of its Snapdragon 8cx compute platform, originally designed to be an alternative to Intel-based processors for PCs and laptops. It has since evolved into a chipset offering AI processing, 5G connectivity, and efficient performance-per-watt uptime.

The “Snapdragon X Series” name was chosen to embody what Qualcomm thinks is best for its PC and laptop processors in the future. The brand claimed it would continue to offer all the old perks of its Snapdragon 8cx, but the new series also uses its new, proprietary Qualcomm Oryon CPU introduced in 2022. For reference, the 8cx was using Qualcomm Kryo CPUs.

The new Snapdragon X Series will start featuring Qualcomm's proprietary Oryon CPU.

The new Snapdragon X Series chipsets are also designed to “deliver accelerated on-device user experiences for the new era of generative AI”, using the chipset’s neural processing unit (NPU).

If it sounds familiar to you, it’s because Apple also has a dedicated co-processor called Neural Engine for machine learning and artificial intelligence tasks on its M-series and A-series silicon. These processors have also made their way into various Apple computers, like its laptops, tablets, and phones.

So, what does the rebrand mean for you? According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X Series helps to keep things familiar (using its Snapdragon branding) and simple (with X denoting how it’s specifically for PC platforms, versus its non-X products). Qualcomm also said that the series will feature a “clear, simplified tiering structure” for its users to tell if it’s an entry-level or premium flagship-grade Snapdragon X chip.

We will probably hear even more about Snapdragon X from Qualcomm later this year, since its annual Snapdragon Summit is due soon.
