The Ioniq 5 N is Hyundai's first high-performance EV and it packs a whopping 600hp
Who says electric cars can't be fun? Certainly not Hyundai, and certainly not Hyundai's new Ioniq 5 N – the company's first-ever high-performance electric car.
Essentially, the Ioniq 5 N is the souped-up version of the Ioniq 5 that was made available in Singapore earlier this year.
Power has been increased dramatically to the tune of 600hp. And there's even an "N Grin Boost" mode that boosts the power to 641hp for 10 seconds.
With this mode activated, it can get from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The top speed is a very respectable 260km/h.
We already know EVs can get really fast, but what makes the Ioniq 5 N different from other fast EVs is how you can get it to sound and behave like a traditional ICE car.
To start there are selectable sound modes, and one of them emulates the sound of the turbocharged four-cylinder found in Hyundai's very own Elantra N or Kona N.
And on top of that, there are even simulated gearshifts. By very cleverly and quickly cutting power to the motor, the Ioniq 5 N can mimic the feeling and behaviour of a car with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Yes, it's all fakery, but at least it addresses the lack of engagement that plagues so many fast EVs. Hyundai should definitely be applauded for daring to be different and taking these risks.
The Ioniq 5 N retains all the practicality of the standard Ioniq 5. The boot remains large and to ensure the range isn't too heavily compromised by the more powerful motors, it has a larger 84kWh battery (up from 77.4kWh). Hyundai hasn't shared range estimates but it's largely expected to be in the region of around 350km.
Availability and pricing
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will go on sale in early 2024. Pricing has yet to be determined but it will likely start at around US$60,000 to US$70,000.
