League of Legends' newest champion is a mid lane mage

At the recent League of Legends World Championship final, Riot Games announced a new champion. Hwei, is set to join the game's roster and the publisher has provided insights into his unique abilities.

The new mid lane mage

Hwei emerges as a mage character, primarily designed for the mid lane, an area in League of Legends (LoL) that's been notably lacking in human male mages. His addition to the game is not just about filling a gap; it's also about introducing complexity. Hwei stands out with an extensive toolkit, boasting 10 different abilities, which is notably higher than many existing champions.

Hwei's abilities: A blend of offense, support, and control

Hwei's abilities are divided into three distinct sets, each containing three spells. An interesting mechanic here is the interdependency within these sets: activating one ability automatically puts the other two on cooldown. This demands strategic selection and timing from the players, adding a layer of tactical depth to his gameplay.

The 'Disaster' Set: Focused on Damage

The first set, named 'Disaster', is all about offensive capabilities. 'Devastating Fire' launches a fireball, 'Severing Bolt' executes a delayed strike, and 'Molten Fissure' creates a lava line that slows enemies. Each of these is designed to deal damage in different scenarios, offering a range of offensive strategies.

The 'Serenity' Set: Buffs and Support

The 'Serenity' abilities shift focus to supporting Hwei and his teammates. 'Fleeting Current' enhances movement speed, 'Pool of Reflection' provides a shielding effect, and 'Stirring Lights' buffs Hwei's attack, also restoring mana on successful hits. This set positions Hwei as more than just an aggressor, but also a champion capable of aiding his team.

The 'Torment' Set: Crowd Control Skills

Hwei's third set, 'Torment', includes crowd control skills essential for team fights. 'Grim Visage' induces fear, 'Gaze of the Abyss' roots the closest champion, and 'Crushing Maw' pulls enemies together. These abilities can disrupt enemy strategies and provide tactical advantages during clashes.

Ultimate Ability: 'Spiraling Despair'

Hwei's ultimate, 'Spiraling Despair', is a powerful tool in his arsenal. It attaches an orb to an enemy champion, causing damage and slowing down nearby enemies, culminating in an explosive finish. This ability has the potential to be a game-changer in team fights and skirmishes.

Launch timeline

Hwei is slated for release in the upcoming League of Legends patch 13.24, expected in a few weeks. I think his introduction will bring a fresh dynamic to the mid lane and possibly alter the current meta in significant ways.
