In a quiet update found amongst its support pages, Meta has said that “beginning in mid-December 2023, you will no longer be able to chat with Facebook accounts on Instagram”. No firm date was given.

While Meta has given no reason for the move, speculation says it could be due to concerns over the upcoming Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which includes requirements for large companies to offer interoperability between messaging platforms by March 2024.

According to the page, any previous chats between Instagram and Facebook will become read-only.

To continue conversations with friends on Facebook, Instagram users are told to do so via Messenger or Facebook from their own Facebook account.
