Netflix is now streaming games on TVs, PCs, and Macs
Netflix has announced plans to bring its cloud-streamed gamesto TVs, PCs and Macs.
The company shared that it is rolling out a limited beta test to a small number of users in Canada and the U.K. on select TVs, and on PCs and Macs through supported browsers in the next few weeks.
Select TV brands include Amazon Fire TV streaming media players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. More devices will be added regularly.
Two games – Oxenfree from Night School Studio, and Molehew's Mining Adventure, a gem-mining arcade game – will be part of the limited beta test.
For Netflix Games on TV, users can use their phones as controllers. For Netflix Games on PCs and Macs, the controllers will be the keyboard and mouse.
Netflix Games was launched in November 2021 on Android before arriving on the iPhone and iPad.Users do not need to pay additional fees and can enjoy an ad-free gaming experience with no in-app purchases.
However, as of August 2022, less than 1% of Netflix customers were reportedly playing the games daily.
What's interesting here is that Netflix is seeing its cloud-streaming games as "value add." Its VP of games Mike Verdu said, "We’re not asking you to subscribe as a console replacement, so it’s a completely different business model.The hope is over time that it just becomes this very natural way to play games wherever you are.”
