Qualcomm and Meta have partnered to bring on-device artificial intelligence (AI) to mobile devices that carry Snapdragon processors.

Meta’s Llama 2— a generative, open-source large language AI model — will be implemented onto Snapdragon platforms (what Qualcomm calls their all-in-one chipsets and processors). This addition of AI would bring AI services onto the device, without relying solely on cloud services or online connections to serve its users.

As seen in its official statement, the benefits go both ways between device manufacturers and consumers. Manufacturers of future Snapdragon-powered phones, AR/VR headsets, and vehicles can save on cloud data expenditure. Users get more privacy with their personalised data and experiences.

The examples given by Qualcomm include the offline usage of intelligent virtual assistants, apps, content production tools, and entertainment apps. These options would not be limited by having no connectivity or working in “airplane mode” (user-enabled offline mode) because Llama 2 would be built into the device via its Snapdragon chipset.

This distinction came about as an improvement to existing AI implementations that rely on cloud services. For example, Google’s Magic Eraser feature (which debuted on the Pixel 6 series) was subsequently released to other Android phones and iPhones this year, with the caveat of using Google Photos (and the cloud-processed AI) to magic-erase things. Another prominent example is noise cancellation AI for Google Meet video conferencing calls, which Google has said it’s also a cloud-based feature.

This AI implementation is set to appear in devices starting from 2024 onwards. For now, app and device developers can use Qualcomm’s AI Stack to optimise their apps for on-device AI.
