Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Seamless is the answer to cross-platform, cross-device linking

Snapdragon Seamless is a new cross-platform, cross-device linking tool by Qualcomm.

Did you know that Singaporeans, on average, have 3.3 connected devices per person? In the U.S., it’s 21 digital devices per household. It really falls on your device makers and brands to ensure they can work seamlessly with each other.

Well, at least Qualcomm is trying harder now. Unveiled at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit 2023 is a new cross-platform technology called Snapdragon Seamless. Qualcomm said it's designed to create cross-platform and multi-device user experiences regardless of operating system, brand, or platform type, with brands like Microsoft, Android, Xiaomi, ASUS, Honor, Lenovo, and Oppo already on board.

Examples given by Qualcomm include having computer mice and keyboards working across PCs, phones, and tablets, drag-and-drop ability between different devices of different types, and auto-switching of audio sources for earbuds with priority built-in.

While these are currently possible within certain brands and their devices, Snapdragon Seamless works across brands or device types using Android, Windows, and Snapdragon — across phones, laptops, glasses, cars, earbuds, webcams, and more. An example is Intelligent Audio Switching without using Bluetooth Multipoint, or even needing the feature.

For now, Qualcomm developed a Seamless Interface for Screen and File Sharing across Android phones and Snapdragon-backed Windows laptops. While it’s designed for devices that go beyond Snapdragon SoCs, the framework, APIs, and libraries for Snapdragon Seamless has to be adopted by other device makers to mix into their own cross-platform solutions (e.g. Google using Snapdragon Seamless for its existing Fast Pair and file-sharing features).

For Snapdragon devices, Snapdragon Seamless is already available on its latest mobile chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 3), its rebranded premium PC chipset (Snapdragon X Elite), and the new audio platform (Snapdragon S7 Pro). It’s also available to devices running Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and Snapdragon AR2 Gen 1. Qualcomm said it will be extended to IoT, XR and Automobile devices in the future.
