Besides the Meta Quest 3 and its new generative AI approach to its existing products, Meta also announced an improved version of its smart glasses that are made in partnership with EssilorLuxottica.

Meta, the owner of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, now offers a second-generation version of Ray-Ban | Meta Smart Glasses. Both brands learnt from their first version to bring out major improvements in its follow-up model. Here are the key tweaks in the new pairs:

Thanks to new custom-designed speakers, audio is now 50% louder than before. It offers 2x the bass, an improved directional audio field to reduce sound leakage, and a newly designed five-microphone array for recording and calls.

Meta also put in a new ultra-wide 12MP camera for 1080p60FPS videos. This camera can be commanded to share photos with friends and family with a voice command.

These additions come despite a reduction in weight and profile, making the new Ray-Ban | Meta Smart Glasses lighter than before. The new glasses are also rated at IPX4, which means no rated dust resistance with some water resistance built-in. Also added are an improved touchpad and extra interaction earcons (notification sounds) for better reliability and responsiveness.

Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 processing platform, which powers the Ray-Ban | Meta Smart Glasses.

Its internals also upgraded to the Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 processing platform. The chipset made its commercial debut at the same time as Meta’s smart glasses. According to Qualcomm, the chip is designed for AR-based smart glasses and contains its third-generation Hexagon NPU for processing AI workloads. This chip is not to be confused with the one launched at Qualcomm’s annual summit last year.

According to Meta, the charging case for the glasses grants eight additional full charges, bringing their total uptime to 36 hours of use on the go. From here, we can see that the smart glasses have four hours of battery life alone.

A key feature of the new smart glasses is hands-free livestreaming. These glasses allow you to livestream directly to Facebook or Instagram, see comments in the preview, or tap and hold the sides to hear them recited out loud. Also integrated is Meta AI for the U.S. market, where saying “Hey Meta” grants you additional voice controls.
