Following the launch of its Wi-Fi 7 routers, mesh systems, and access points, TP-Link has announced plans with Singtel to bundle TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 7 router with the telco’s 10Gbps fibre broadband plans from December 2023.

As with all new networking standards, Wi-Fi 7 is said to bring reduced latency while increasing capacity, speed, and improving stability with major improvements over both Wi-Fi 6 and even the newer Wi-Fi 6E. The performance boost of Wi-Fi 7 is nothing short of astounding. It offers speeds that are 4.8 times faster than Wi-Fi 6 and a remarkable 13 times faster than Wi-Fi 5.

Key features of Wi-Fi 7 include:

Multi-Link Operation: Multi-Link Operation (MLO), enhances connectivity by allowing devices to intelligently switch between available network connections communicating using more than one band. Previous Wi-Fi standards only allowed connections over a single band. For example, a Wi-Fi 7 router can transmit data to a Wi-Fi 7 client using a combination of its 5GHz band and/or 6GHz band.Wider Channels: Each frequency band is comprised of many channels, and the wider the channel, the more data it can carry. And in Wi-Fi 7, the commonly used 5GHz band is no longer limited to just channels with widths of 20MHz. These channels can combine to form wider 40MHz or 80MHz channels. Wi-Fi 7 also supports the 6GHz band, and channels in this band can combine to be as wide as 320MHz.Higher QAM: Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) is a method to transmit and receive data in radio waves. Wi-Fi 7 achieves a level of data encoding that is faster and more reliable. Wi-Fi 7’s new 4096-QAM technique, is four times that of Wi-Fi 6’s 1024-QAM.

Do note however, that you also need a Wi-Fi 7-enabled device to enjoy the true promise of Wi-Fi 7.

TP-Link's Wi-Fi 7 HB810 router will be offered in December as part of Singtel’s 10Gbps Fibre Broadband plan. This plan is currently available at a promotional price of S$79.72 per month. The upgrade will enable Singtel customers to enjoy approximately five times higher real-world wireless speeds of up to 8Gbps, compared to Wi-Fi 6/Wi-Fi 6E today. The current plan offers Wi-Fi 6 connectivity to subscribers with an ASUS GT-AX11000 Pro router.

TP-Link Wi-Fi 7 devices will also be available to Singtel customers on other broadband plans as an optional add-on.
