Honor has started its limited public beta tests for its Android 14 operating system, MagicOS 8.0.

According to KKJ.CN, a software drivers news site, Honor’s beta test is only limited to users in China for the Magic4 and Magic5 series handsets.

The beta test is open to 3,000 users on the Magic4 series and 3,000 others on the Magic5 series. Of each 3,000, 500 testers can enroll in a logged version of the test, which sends phone information to Honor’s developers for further tweaks before its official release.

Why is this important? That’s because many phone manufacturers have Android 14 as their current operating system. Honor running trials for a major update is a good sign that the phone has decent firmware support in the foreseeable future. Typically, you’d want these firmware updates to keep your phone compatible with the latest apps and security measures.

Besides Google (which launched Android 14 with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro), Samsung is the only other major phone brand with its Android 14 reskin (One UI 6) currently live.

Oppo and Xiaomi also have new phones with Android 14 right out of the box, but these devices are only available in China for now (see Oppo Reno11 series, and Xiaomi 14 series).
