Samsung unveils its first FE tablets, meet the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ and Galaxy Tab S9 FE

The smaller Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE has a 10.9-inch display.

Samsung is reviving its FE (Fan Edition) lineup in a big way this year. Alongside the new Galaxy S23 FE, the Korean tech giants are also announcing two new tablets to the FE collection called the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ and Galaxy Tab S9 FE.

These tablets are an extension of the Galaxy Tab S9 series. While the earlier-released Galaxy S9, S9+, and S9 Ultra are unmistakably flagship-class devices, the FE tablets announced today aims to give users a taste of flagship-class performance but at a more accessible price point.

The two tablets only differ slightly. The most notable difference is that the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ has a larger display and bigger battery. Otherwise, the two tablets are mostly the same. The Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ is available in Silver, while the Galaxy Tab S9 FE is available in Mint and Grey.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 Tab FE+ differs by having a larger display and battery.

The Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ features a 12.4-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, while the Galaxy Tab S9 FE has a smaller 10.9-inch LCD display with a resolution of 2304 x 1440 pixels. Both tablets’ displays have 90Hz refresh rates.

And as for batteries, the larger Tab S9 FE+ has a 10,090mAh battery while the smaller Tab S9 FE has an 8,000mAh battery. The claimed battery life is up to 20 hours and 18 hours for the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ and Galaxy Tab S9 FE respectively. Also, both tablets support up to 45W fast charging.

Underneath the proverbial hood, both tablets are powered by an Exynos 1380 processor. The larger Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ has more memory – 8GB – while the smaller Galaxy Tab S9 FE has 6GB. Both tablets have the same 128GB of internal storage. You can get them without 5G connectivity – that means Wi-Fi only – or with 5G connectivity.

Readers will be happy to know that bundled in the box with the tablets is the S Pen. Useful for note-taking and doodling, it features a pen-like type and has 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity. To ensure customers use their S Pens to their fullest potential, each tablet will come with a free one-year subscription to Goodnotes.

You can purchase these covers for the tablets.

Other noteworthy features include dual speakers tuned by AKG and that it has an IP68 water resistance rating, which means it can withstand splashes of water and even be submerged in water up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes.

It’s nice to see Samsung get back in the FE and tablet game in a big way because the world needs good and affordable Android tablets. And based on first impressions, these look like very decent Android tablets. Build quality is decent and the displays, though not OLED, look crisp and bright enough. They seem zippy too. But we’ll need more time with them to be sure.

Pricing and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ and Galaxy Tab S9 FE will both be available in Singapore on 20 October 2023.

Prices of the Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ will start at S$869, while prices of the smaller Galaxy Tab S9 FE start at S$669.

As part of launch promotions, any purchase of the two tablets between 20 October to 10 November 2023 will get a free Galaxy Buds FE worth S$158.
