StarHub and Singtel lead the way in Singapore’s latest Mobile Network Experience report
Customers of StarHub and Singtel are likely to be the happiest with their 5G experience with the two telcos leading the way in the latest Opensignal Mobile Network Experience Report on Singapore.
For the 90-day period starting on 1 August 2023 and ending on 29 October that measures the mobile network experience of Singapore’s four national operators, StarHub won the most awards this quarter with five awards outright and sharing first place across four categories. Singtel followed closely behind, with five first-place wins and one joint win lesser than StarHub.
M1 won 3 joint first-place wins in the same categories as its 5G network infrastructure partner StarHub, losing out in the 5G Live Video Experience category. We reached out to Opensignal as to the reasons behind M1’s loss in this category but have yet to receive a reply.
Fourth telco Simba did not place in any category at all.
In a change from the last report, Singtel is the outright winner of the 5G Download Speed award, replacing the previous joint winners StarHub and M1. In addition, Singtel leads the way in both the 5G Download Speed and Upload Speed categories, as well as the 5G Coverage Experience.
StarHub placed first in four of the five Overall Experience categories. These were the Video Experience, Live Video Experience, Games Experience, and the Download Speed Experience. Unlike 5G Video Experience, which represents on-demand video streams, 5G Live Video Experience quantifies live video streaming used for current events. For example, when users watch live sports, game streams, music concerts, or news where the event is happening at that moment in time.
The wins for Singtel and StarHub come at a time when M1, Singtel and StarHub are preparing to fully shut down their 3G networks by the end of July 2024. According to the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), retailers will no longer be able to sell 3G mobile phones or 4G phones that require 3G for voice calls from 1 February 2024.
Once the 3G networks have been switched off, it will be possible to re-farm the spectrum for 5G use, this could further improve capacity, speeds, and the user experience.
